VAT & Making Tax Digital
VAT is the tax most likely to catch a growing business out — the registration threshold arrives quietly, the scheme you pick makes a real difference, and the return has to be filed from compatible software. We handle the registration, the software and the quarterly cycle.
What the fee covers
Included as standard
Registration handled
Including the timing — registering at the right moment, and voluntary registration where reclaiming input VAT is worth more than the administration.
Scheme review
Standard, cash accounting, flat rate or annual accounting. Reviewed against how you actually invoice and get paid, and revisited as the business changes.
MTD software set up
A compatible package configured and connected to HMRC, with digital links in place so the record-keeping requirements are genuinely met.
Quarterly returns prepared and filed
Reconciled to your records, filed on time, with the payment amount confirmed to you before the due date.
Deregistration when appropriate
If turnover drops below the threshold and staying registered no longer helps you, we say so.
Common questions
Questions we get asked about this
When do I have to register for VAT?
When your VAT-taxable turnover exceeds the registration threshold in any rolling 12-month period, or when you expect to exceed it within the next 30 days alone. The threshold is set by HMRC and changes periodically.
Does Making Tax Digital apply to me?
All VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file VAT returns using compatible software. MTD is also being extended to income tax Self Assessment for landlords and the self-employed above certain income levels, phased in by turnover.
Is the flat rate scheme worth it?
It depends on how much VAT you incur on purchases. It suits businesses with low input VAT and works badly for those buying a lot of standard-rated goods. We check it against your actual figures rather than assuming.
Can you fix returns that were filed wrongly?
Yes. Errors can usually be corrected, either on the next return or by notifying HMRC directly depending on the size of the error. Correcting it voluntarily is treated far more favourably than leaving it.
